The Akhanda Deepak (lamp) has its own special place in Sanatan Vaidik Hindu Dharma. It is a form and a symbol of Tej (Absolute fire principle). The lamp leads us from darkness towards light. It burns only to give message of peace and light to the man. This is its greatness. In this Satsang we shall try to understand what the scriptures have to say about the lamp. Amongst the articles of puja the lamp is an important article. The following mantra which is recited during the ritual of puja explains its significance.

Meaning: Deity of lamp, you are of the form of Bramhan (the absolute truth). You are full of radiance. You never wither. Please bestow me health and good progeny and please fulfill my wishes.

It is considered very good to have the lamp that we light be lit through out the prayer. During Navratra, the lamp if lit till the end of the 9th day is considered to bring lot of luck, happiness, prosperity etc.

The "akhanda deepak" should not be extinguished by itself or by someone, which means it should be lit through out the prayer period which may be more than 24 hours.

An oil lamp is lit to bow down to knowledge as the greatest of all forms. The oil or ghee in the lamp symbolizes our vasanaas or vices and the cotton wick, the ego. When lit by spiritual knowledge, the vasanas get slowly exhausted and the ego too perishes. The flame of a lamp always burns upwards and similarly one should acquire such knowledge as to take us towards higher ideals.

Make: Made in shining brass, it can hold 750 ml oil. Brass is well known for its grasping capacity. It grasps the divine spirit upto 30%,when compared to other metals. The spiritual vibrations are attracted towards these shining idols easily.

It is especially significant during the Akhand Path, where the lamp symbolizes the continuous light of faith and devotion. Lighting this diya during these occasions can enhance the spiritual atmosphere and bring blessings to your home.

To maintain the Akhand Jyoti Diya, ensure it is cleaned regularly to remove soot and residue from the oil or ghee used. You can use a soft cloth or sponge to gently wipe the exterior. Additionally, always check the wick and replace it if it becomes too short or burnt out to ensure a steady flame during your rituals.

Lighting the Akhand Jyoti Diya during prayers holds deep spiritual significance in Hindu rituals. It represents the transition from darkness to light, symbolizing knowledge, purity, and the divine presence. Keeping the diya lit throughout the prayer period is believed to attract positive energy and blessings, making it an essential part of the puja.
