Dhumavati is the embodiment of "unsatisfied desires." Her status as a widow itself is curious. She makes herself one by swallowing Shiva, an act of self-assertion, and perhaps independence. Dhumavati devi is worshipped for all round success and spiritual upliftment. Dhumavati is the smoky form of Shakti. She is also known as the eternal widow, the Shakti without Shiva.

Goddess Dhumavati is 7th of the Das Mahavidyas. Dhumavati describes the fearsome and ugly appearance of Devi. She is portrayed as restless and wicked. She is described as an old, ugly widow, and Shakti without Shiva. She is associated with negative things viewed as inauspicious, unattractive and frustration, sorrows, poverty, destitution and suffering, and loneliness. Such as the crow and the Chaturmas period. The goddess is often described on a horseless chariot or riding a crow, which symbolizes evil forces and black magic in a cremation ground. Her Puja removes the malefic effects of the planet Ketu. Although worshipping her blesses one with ultimate knowledge, nature of life, awareness about real truths and relief from all troubles.
