The Goddess Tara meaning "star", is the second of the DasaMahavidyas or "ten Great Wisdom goddesses". She was also called She Who Brings Forth Life, The Great Compassionate Mother, and The Embodiment of Wisdom, and the Great Protectress.

White Tara, also called "the Mother of all Buddhas" is the perfect embodiment of graceful power, wisdom and purity. As with Tara expressions in other 5 colours, the vibrations of white colour express the specific energy of White Tara. Pure, truthful, powerful, transcending all limitations - these are just some of the attributes of colour white that describe the energy of White Tara.

The legend begins with the churning of the ocean between the Devas and Asuras. Lord Shiva drank the poison (Halahala) that was created from the churning of the ocean (in the process turning his throat blue and earning him the epithet Nilakantha), thus saving the world from destruction, but fell unconscious under its powerful effect. Tara Ma appeared and took Shiva on her lap. She suckled him, the milk from her breasts counteracting the poison, and he recovered. Goddess Tara embodies the feminine strengths of great caring and compassion, the ability to endure stressful and even terrifying moments, the acts of creation, and the source of sustenance and protection. She also embodied inner peace and spiritual acceptance. She symbolizes purity and is thought to be part of every good and virtuous woman.

Goddess Tara is an archetype of our own inner wisdom. She guides and protects us as we navigate the depths of our unconscious minds, helping us to transform consciousness, our own personal journeys of freedom. It is the goddess Tara who helps us to remain "centered". She remind us of our "oneness" with all of creation and the importance of nurturing the spirit within.
