‘Nani’ generally means grandmother, however in this case, it is the name of a woman. 'Bai' means a woman. 'Mayro’, or the independent word ‘mayra’ represents a Rajasthani (related to the Indian State of Rajasthan and Gujarat) tradition, when a girl is married, a set of gifts (anything like clothes/ornaments/ etc, according to their economic capability) from her mother’s house are sent for each member of the other family (in which she got married).

Nani bai ro mayro (“The mayra of Nani bai”) is a story of Gujarat state during the years 1414 – 1481, where this girl named Nani bai is married, but her family cannot afford the mayra at all. Her father known as Narsi Mehta or Narsi Bhagat was a poet-saint of Gujarat, and a member of the Nagar Brahmins community, notable as a bhakta, an exponent of Hindu devotional religious poetry. He is especially revered in Gujarati literature, where he is acclaimed as its Adi Kavi (Sanskrit for "first among poets"). His bhajan "Vaishnav Jan To Tene Re Kahiye..." is Mahatma Gandhi's favorite and has become synonymous to him. People use to ask him, from where you will manage the Mayra. He said "Lord Krishna will take care". Narsi Mehta was a great devotee of Lord Krishna. On the day of the Mayra, listening to his devotion and honest prayers, Lord Krishna Himself comes to earth in a disguised (human) form, and brought a big Mayra, satisfying all the in-laws of Nani bai.
