Sati in her next birth was born as a daughter to Himalaya and was named Parvati. Name Shailaputri means the daughter (putri) of the mountain (Shaila) and the absolute form of Mother Nature. As she is Prakriti, she looks after all existing organisms including human beings, animals, trees, shrubs, plants and even small existing things on Earth.

Navratri is one of the most significant festivals, celebrated twice a year, once in summer and once in the winter. Navratri is celebrated for nine nights. During this festival, people pray to Goddess Durga as she is believed to be the representation of positive cosmic energy – the Adi Shakti. Navratri is celebrated to worship Goddess Durga and her myriad forms in all its glory. Each of the nine days of Navratri is dedicated to the worship of different forms of the benevolent mother Devi Durga. The nine days are divided into three days each for Mahakali, Mahalaxmi and Mahasaraswati.

This is a very unique and elaborate Puja for all the nine forms of Devi Durga. She is the divine energy or the driving force which enlivens the entire creation. The nine different manifestation of Devi Durga are Shailputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skand Mata, Katyayani, Kaal Ratri, Maha Gauri and Siddhidatri.

In Sanskrit, Shailputri is an combination of two words- 'Shail' which means mountains and 'Putri' which means daughter. Shail means the mountain and due to which Goddess was known as Shailputri, the daughter of the mountain. Goddess Shailaputri is considered the absolute form of Mother Nature. In some cultures, she is also known as Goddess Parvati, wife of Lord Shiva, the mother of Ganesha and Kartikeya. Born as the daughter of Himalaya and first, among the Navdurgas, Shailaputri literally means daughter (putri) of the mountain (shaila). Goddess Shailputri is an absolute form of Mother Nature. She is the embodiment of patience and devotion. She is also Goddess Parvati who is revered as the consort of Lord Shiva in this form. Before taking the form of Shailaputri, she was Sati in her previous birth, who immolated herself in a yogic fire as her husband Lord Shiva was humiliated in a sacrificial ceremony held by her father Daksh Prajapati. She takes the incarnation of Devi Shailputri to be married again to Lord Shiva with due respect.Devi Shailaputri resides in Muladhara Chakra, being the source of Shakti. Starting the first day of our spiritual journey is to focus on this chakra to be bestowed with strength, courage, and composure. The color “Red” is significant for this day as this Devi symbolizes action and vigor to be steadfast in achieving our goals. Devi Shailaputri has been considered the embodiment of patience and upon awakening begins her journey from her father to her husband from the Muladhara Chakra or the root chakra which in yogic terms is said to be the base from which the three main psychic channels emerge.
